Junior School News, February 10th, 2012

At Monday’s assembly we welcomed three TY students who are doing their work experience in the school. Ms. Abrahamse told the bible story of Naaman.  We congratulated the J5 class with their fantastic result of their Cake Sale of last Friday.  The girls raised € 180.71 for Unicef and Habitat for Humanity.  Well done girls!

Ms. Fitzgerald continued on with her stories of famous composers and this week she told the story of Franz Joseph Haydn. He was a contemporary of Mozart and like him- he was a court musician in Vienna. Ms. Fitzgerald explained that a symphony consists of four parts and that Haydn had composed over 100 symphonies! Whilst conducting his 45th Symphony in the summer palace of Prince Estherhazy, known as ‘The Farewell Symphony’, two  orchestra members stood up  during the last movement and left  the stage. Gradually all members left till there were just a violinist and Haydn were standing on the stage. The reason for these sudden departures was that Prince Esterhazy had stayed too long on in his summer palace and the musicians longed to get back to their families in Vienna. Luckily the Prince took the hint and departed for the capital the following day.

Congratulations to the J4 and J6 hockey teams who played in two different tournaments this week.  The girls played very well and showed great progress. The J6 A –team captained by Zoe McCracken came first in their tournament in Mt. Anville and were awarded a medal for their achievement.  Well done girls!

Ms. Abrahamse completed the bible story of Naaman at Thursday’s assembly.
