Hermione Exhibition at Alexandra College, 3rd to 16th March 2017.
The Hermione Exhibition at Alexandra College in Milltown, Dublin 6 was established to complement the Hermione Art Lecture which has taken place annually since 1896. Both events arise from an endowment in memory of Hermione Fitzgerald, the 5th Duchess of Leinster, a fervent advocate of the arts. This year the Lecture is being given by Alexandra past pupil and internationally renowned artist Joy Gerrard at 8.00 p.m. on 2nd March. Her work is included in the show, while her critically acclaimed solo show at the RHA continues until 26th March.
The Hermione Exhibition has been held in Alexandra College for the past 24 years, to enhance the College students’ experience, appreciation and understanding of the visual arts.
The Exhibition is a particularly inclusive celebration of artists who have long been associated with Alexandra College, and latterly, of established and emerging artists newly curated to exhibit in the show.
This year the exhibition takes a slight change in direction and is co-curated by the independent curator Aisling Prior, along with the school’s art teacher, Patricia Crowley.
“It’s so unusual to be asked to co-curate an exhibition for such a lively and unique context. It’s been very rewarding and exciting curating artists emerging from the art colleges and awards exhibitions whose work, I feel, can speak very closely to the students in Alexandra. It really is a unique group show, embracing work by all sorts of different artists. It’s amazing that the school supports both its students and Irish artists in this way.” Aisling Prior
Almost 90 artists are in the 2017 exhibition. Artists include recent award winners from the RDS Visual Art Awards, the Hennessy Portraits Awards, a host of recent graduates from across Ireland, members of Aosdana and of the RHA, and artists represented by many of Ireland’s leading galleries.
New work by Gareth Phelan, Alan Phelan, Robert Armstrong, Shane Berkery, Peter Bradley, Mick O’Dea, Megan Burns, Richard Forrest, Michael Cullen, Sean Molloy, Gillian Lawlor, Blaise Drummond, Gabhann Dunne, Cecilia Danell, Mollie Douthit, Eithne Jordan, Gerry Davis, Alice Maher, Steven Maybury, John Cronin, Janet Mullarney, Mark Cullen, Francis Matthews, Allan Kinsella, Elva Mulchrone, Damien Flood, Diana Copperwhite, Sven Sandberg, Mateus Lubecki, Una Sealy, Kathy Tynan, Blaise Smith, Eleanor McCaughey, Hughie O’Donoghue and Nevan Lahart, amongst many others, will be on show.
Not only is the exhibition a totally unique group show of work by some Ireland’s best and most promising artists, it is also a really great opportunity to buy work to add to a collection or to start growing a collection.
