1. 150 Years Celebrations – September

This academic year marked 150 years of Alexandra College. Founded in 1866, Alexandra College has been at the forefront of education for girls ever since.

During this historic year, many events took place to celebrate Alex150. The Alex 150 Parents Ball was organised by the parents of the College, for the parents and staff of the College. This event was to celebrate the people that help make Alexandra College the incredible place that it is.

A key event in the Alex150 calendar was The Ardilaun Lecture by Professor Roy Foster. The theme of this lecture was “Women, Radicalisation and the Irish Revolution”. Following the lecture, Professor Foster launched the book “Pioneering Alexandrans”, edited by Ronan Fanning. The book showcases seventy-seven people who reflect the diversity that encapsulates the pioneers and innovators of Ireland’s most prestigious educational establishments.

2. Culwick 2016 – Nov 2016

There are many things that set Alexandra College apart from other schools and one of those is the Culwick Choral Competition, a musical competition which has been running in Alexandra College for 84 consecutive years. Many alumnae rate taking part in Culwick among their favourite Alex experiences.

You can read more about this tradition and watch videos from this year’s competition using this link.

4.Hermione Art Exhibition 2017 – Feb 2017

The Hermione Exhibition at Alexandra College was established to complement the Hermione Art Lecture which has taken place annually since 1896. Both events arise from an endowment in memory of Hermione Fitzgerald, the 5th Duchess of Leinster, a fervent advocate of the arts. This year, the Lecture was given by Alexandra College past pupil and internationally renowned artist Joy Gerrard.

You can read more about the exhibition here, and view pictures from the night here.

5. Alex Artisans Market – May 2017

The Artisans Market is an annual tradition in Alexandra College. Transition year students create their own business from start to finish. This involves creating a budget, monitoring expenses through book keeping, marketing their stand (both in and outside of the College), designing the look of their stands, deciding on the food they will sell and how to make this food, creating posters and much more.

This is an amazing opportunity for the students to gain knowledge of all aspects of running a small business. Students also give half of all earnings to a charity of their choice.

You can read more and view photos from the day by clicking here.

6. Transition Year Musical My Fair Lady

This year’s TY musical was My Fair Lady. The students and staff worked incredibly hard and we were treated to two fantastic sold out performances.

You can read more about the musical here. To see the photos from the show click here.

7. Fun Day

Each year Fun Day begins with a debate. Two groups comprising teachers and students debate over predetermined topics. The final topic is given to them on the day and they are given 15 minutes to create their argument. While they prepare the final discussion, students are called up to discuss various topics. This year’s topics included “Does pineapple belong on pizza?”. After the debate finishes, students compete in sports day activities on the sports pitches.

You can see photos from the two events here.
