Well done to all the girls for the amazing job they did presenting their science projects at the Intel Scientist Exhibition in November. KG Lower to J2 did class projects, while J3-J6 did group and individual ones. Sue and Ronan from Intel judged the J4-J6 projects and commented on the excellent standard of the projects overall.

Regional Finalist – 2016 Intel Mini Scientist Competition – December 2016

Belle Moore (J4) Title: Using Drones to Deliver Parcels in Dublin: a Feasibility Study

Read about the remarkable work that Belle Moore has put into her project. We would like to wish her all the very best as she takes part in the regional final of the competition.

“I have been very busy since I won the Intel Mini Scientist Competition in our school on November 17th. I have visited the Irish Aviation Authority (IAA) who makes the rules and regulations for drone flight in Ireland. They were very helpful, especially Captain Niall Cummins. They gave me lots of information and a tour of their offices.

I visited FDS Worldwide who deliver Parcels all over the world to ask if they thought international drone parcel delivery would ever be possible. The staff filled in questionnaires which were very informative. I also visited the cockpit of an Aer Lingus Airbus 320. Captain Karl Mc Quaid explained to me about radar and drones. I was invited to a Civil Defence Awards ceremony in the Phoenix Park where some of their members were awarded their drone training certificates. RTE were there filming and it was on the news that night.

Last weekend, I became the youngest person in Ireland to have received the IAA approved iFly Technology Drone Training Groundschool Certificate. I had two tests – an open book test and a closed book test – and I got 89% overall. It was very interesting and the course took two full days to complete. I’m looking forward to competing on behalf of Alexandra Junior School in the Regional Finals of the Mini Intel Scientist Competition in Leixlip.”

Belle Moore competed in the regional final of the Intel Mini-Scientist competition. We are delighted to inform you that Belle Moore’s project on drones has made it through to the Grand Final of the competition in the Helix, DCU, on February 3rd 2017. Congratulations, Belle! This is a remarkable achievement.

Belle Moore (J4) – Runner Up in Grand Final – February 2017

Ireland’s first approved parcel delivery by drone was completed last Saturday in Dun Laoghaire by our very own Belle Moore in J4! The flight was part of her research for a project on drones for the Mini Intel Scientist Competition. It took two minutes to complete, with the drone taking the parcel from the shoreline to the boat almost 200m away. Belle’s sister, Betty, was in the boat that received the parcel.

Belle presented her project today (Friday) at the Grand Final of the Intel Mini Scientist Competition in the Helix in DCU. She came in second place overall – congratulations!!! This is an amazing achievement and we are all so proud of Belle.
