Biology
Biology is taught for the Leaving Certificate to 5th and 6th year students in Alexandra College and follows the national biology1curriculum, the syllabus aims to provide continuity and progression from the Junior Certificate programme. Through the study of Biology students employ the processes of science to explore the diversity of life and the inter-relationships between organisms. Students also study the use of living organisms and their products to enhance human health and the environment. The objectives of the syllabus are (a) Knowledge, understanding and skills, (b) Application and Interface with technology and (c) Science in the Political, Social and Economic Spheres
There is a strong emphasis on a practical approach to studying biology. This is encouraged through practical laboratory experience, the course includes mandatory experiments which are undertaken by all students taking Biology. This includes an annual 5th year ecology visit to a habitat.
The course emphasizes the importance of: self-directed learning and independent thought, a spirit of inquiry, critical thinking, problem solving and life long learning.
The science department run their own science week and the students attend lectures by invited speakers.
Alexandra College boasts a state of the art science block that includes three subject specific science laboratories, one general science laboratory all with tiered seating and a networked computer project area. All the laboratories and project areas are wireless free and have fixed data projectors.
Students are encouraged to participate in the Irish and European Science Olympiads and the annual ISTA school quiz.
Alexandra College students receive an excellent education in Biology they are provided with the knowledge, skills and understanding to pursue further education, training and employment in Biology and other science related fields, and to make judgements on contemporary issues in Biology and science that impact on their daily lives and on society.
