Learning Support

Learning support in Alexandra College is organised to be a fun, happy and secure experience to help pupils with learning difficulties to develop to their full potential. Those who would benefit from learning support are identified from their entrance test results and independent psychological reports.

At the commencement of the school year, all new SEN (special educational needs) pupils are assessed in spelling and reading. An IEP (individual educational plan) is developed for each pupil and teaching progresses with a multi-sensory approach to learning spelling, reading and writing. Additional help, if required, is available in mathematics and other subjects.

The SEN school policy incorporates the following:

* Exemption from Latin and or Irish
* Waiver in spelling in all house exams
* Exemption from reading aloud in class
* Provision of typewritten notes if copying from the board causes difficulties
* Extra time (15 minutes) for 1st and 2nd year house exams
* Use of a word processor, tape recorder, reader and/or scribe for house exams
* Support is available up to Leaving Certificate

Application is made to the Department of Education on behalf of all SEN pupils for special arrangements in both the Junior Certificate and Leaving Certificate examinations.

Learning support in Alexandra College is provided by an experienced, full time, fully qualified staff member in liaison with other staff members and in consultation with parents/guardians. Support is complimented using computers, tape recorders and board games. The whole approach is structured to provide an enjoyable learning experience in a caring and supportive atmosphere. The objective is to encourage each pupil to cope with her difficulties, improve her self image and develop her full social and academic potential.
