Gaisce – the President’s Award was launched in International Youth Year 1985. The challenges of 
the Award programme are designed to encourage initiative, self-discipline, leadership and caring skills in young people between the ages of 15 and 25.
The four challenge areas are Community Involvement, Personal Skill, Physical Recreation and Adventure Journey. There are three different awards that one can earn: Bronze, Silver and Gold. The minimum age for the Bronze award is 15. This award is earned over a period of six months.
In Alexandra College, the Transition Year students are encouraged to begin their challenge towards attaining the Bronzegaisce2 award. The Transition Year timetable and involvement in the community affords the students the facility and time to engage in this personal challenge.
