Amawele
Amawele is a foundation focusing on education in the Third World as a key building block in the fight against world problems like poverty, hunger, AIDS and political oppression. Amawele carries out twinning projects, which are partnerships between schools here and in South Africa.
The idea behind this is that because young people in the Cape receive a limited education, and many young people here in Ireland receive a high level of education, we could use all our resources to improve their education system. As well as this, Amawele provides a chance for these two communities to meet and learn about one another, which can then help us identify the needs of the schools and individuals in South Africa
and look for ways to help them.
Alexandra College is taking on this opportunity to help children in South Africa. Twelve 2008/2009 Transition Year are working on this project. These students have been divided into the following groups: the Science committee, the IT committee and the Music committee. Currently we are in contact with Manenberg School’s respective committees and based on their curriculums, we are working on lessons of our own.
Our main method of communication with Manenberg School is a communications website which was set up by students. This website will host blogs from both schools, fortnightly newsletters and the most important part: lessons.
We make videos of lessons and post them for the IT, Science and Music Students and also have live webcam chats. As well as that, we are setting up a school website for Manenberg High School and fundraising to provide them with better materials, facilities and resources.
We are really advancing in our project. Both schools are learning a lot from each other and forming great friendships. Also, we are happy to be playing a small part in tackling other world problems in Africa.
This project will continue in 2009/2010 with the original group of students and a new batch of Transition Years. The ultimate aim of the project is to fundraise for a trip to Mannenburg in 2010. During this trip, Alex students would experience life in a South African school, help out with lessons and prepare for a return visit to Alex by students and staff from the Mannenburg school.
