Hope Foundation
The Hope Foundation is a registered Irish charity set up in 1999 to help restore basic human rights to the street children of Calcutta.
The aim of the charity is to provide shelter, healthcare, education, nutrition, counseling and support to underprivileged children and at-risk young women, and to promote economic self-sufficiency by providing skills training and facilitating the establishment of co-ops.
Hope works in partnership with 10 non-government organizations and presently funds 50 projects that are making a real difference to the lives of children, young women and their families.
Alexandra College has been involved with the Hope Foundation for the last six years thanks to the hard work and dedication of Mr. Gerry Coleman. The school has undertaken to raise 30 000 thousand euro a year for the running of a polio hospital in Calcutta. This is achieved by organizing various fund raising activities throughout the year. The majority of this fund raising is carried
out by the fifth year students in the college.
Every year twelve fifth year students are selected to go to Calcutta and see at first hand the work carried out by the Hope Foundation. For many of these students it is a life changing experience, at times traumatic but overall an enriching, unforgettable visit. Twelve students and two teachers will visit various Hope Foundation projects in March 2009.
