Phuleli

PHULELI: ALEXANDRA COLLEGE LOOKS EAST

Undertaking charitable initiatives has always been a feature of school activities in Alexandra College. In the spring of 2005 a group of teachers decided to support the work of the Irish Nepalese Educational Trust in trying to build a new primary school in Phuleli, a remote village in Nepal just 50 km south of Mount Everest.

The target was to raise €10,000 and a sponsored walk was held and through the enthusiastic and generous support of students, staff and parents an extraordinary €20,642 was raised. The sum, which is indicative of the concern and interest that the whole Alexandra community has for children in the developing world, has effectively built the new school.

At Easter 2006 a group of teachers from Alex travelled to Nepal and visited Phuleli and were present at the foundation stone

laying ceremony at the site of the new school. Like all parents throughout the world, they are keen to educate their children.

As one villager said: “we must educate our children: education is wealth”. Through the altruistic actions of the Alexandra community, the children of Phuleli will attain that wealth through the provision of a new and better school.

Alexandra College has continued to support this project through the sale of a charity calendar for 2007. It contains photos of Phuleli, the school, the children there and the Easter ‘06 trip of the Alex teachers.

This initiative, again supported by students, staff and parents has been hugely successful and has raised a further €16,000.

The Irish Nepalese Educational Trust will be able to use these extra funds to further support the school, pay a teacher and ensure that the whole project remains sustainable.

The long tradition of charity work has reached out to this very remote Nepalese village and a most valuable contact has been made. On the occasion of the Easter ‘06 visit, a formal Letter of Appreciation was read by the chairman of the Committee of the Phuleli Saraswati Primary School and presented to Mrs. Margaret Wynne, Deputy Principal of Alexandra College. This Letter of Appreciation is shown below:
