From its earliest days Alexandra College has had a reputation for looking outward to the community. The Guild was founded in 1897, not only to form a bond of union between past and present students and staff, and to keep them in touch with the College, but also to promote a spirit of service to the community and to undertake social and philanthropic work.
There are many aspects to Alexandra College Guild: Alexandra College Bursaries; Alexandra Guild House – now Cowper Care, Kilternan; Branches (Munster Branch, Northern Ireland Branch and London Branch)
Alexandra College Golfing Society
The Alexandra College Golfing Society hold their annual outing on the 1st Monday in July each year – new golfing members are always welcome.
Old Alexandra Hockey Club
Old Alexandra Hockey is a Senior Club, which incorporates numerous Senior and Junior teams, plus Veterans (over 35s) and Colts (6 and upwards). Old Alexandra Hockey Club play and train in Alexandra College – new members always welcome.
Alexandra College Bursaries
guild3Through the Guild’s oldest charity, the Bursaries Committee, 25 ladies throughout Ireland receive annual bursaries. Every Christmas, College students make up hampers for annuitants. The Bursaries Committee is made up of members of Alexandra College Guild. Bursaries assist many families in and around Dublin and further afield. The Bursaries Committee do need new collectors and donations to keep the bursary fund in a healthy state. Offers of help are always gratefully received. Applicants for bursaries, and offers of new collector groups, whether it be from donations or a bequest in a Will, can be made by contacting The Chairperson, c/o Alexandra College, Milltown, Dublin 6.
Alexandra Guild House (now Cowper Care)
Members of the Alexandra College Guild, who saw the need for a retirement home for elderly ladies in our city, established the house in the Alexandra Guild House in 1954.
Due to changing times – staffing, salaries, maintaining Eastern Health Board conditions it was agreed to merge the Guild House with Cowper Care, and build a new purpose built nursing home and sheltered housing on a green field site, kindly donated by the Kilternan Parish. This house, which will bear the name of Alexandra Close, opened it’s doors in July 2007, and ladies from Alexandra Guild House were transferred either to Cowper Care in Cowper Road or the Kilternan premises. Cowper Care do need the continued support of Guild members, and Donations and Bequests will be gratefully received.
It is now up to the past pupils of Alexandra College to be represented on the new Residents and Visitors Committee. We guild2will need offers of people to join a rota to visit the residents in Kilternan. We have many offers already – 1 or 2 hours every couple of months would be great to play cards or games or just to chat to the residents. Other suggestions are gardening, music, art etc….
Alexandra students (particularly Transition Year students in 4th year) will continue to visit Gascoigne House in Cowper Road and the Cowper Kilternan property during term time and these visits are greatly appreciated by the ladies.
Social Events
The Guild holds a Social Event in the Autumn each year in the College. The Branches in London, Northern Ireland and Munster also hold their own events, and would be delighted to receive new members. The AGM and Reunion Luncheon are always held in the College on the 2nd Saturday in May each year. While everyone is welcome to the Reunion Luncheon, the main thrust of the Reunion is for the ‘decade’ years – 10, 20, 30, 40, 50 and 60 years from leaving.
