Agricultural Science is the study of the science and technology underlying the principles and practices of agriculture. It agri1aims to develop knowledge, skills and attitudes concerning the factors that affect the long -term well-being of agricultural resources and places emphasis on the managed use of these resources.
The course consists of the study of various aspects of agriculture with topics that include Soil, Crops, Forestry, Animal and Plant Physiology, The Cow, The Sheep, The Pig and Environmental Studies.
Practical work is very important in Agricultural Science both laboratory based and field work. Students of agricultural science have to complete an ecology fieldtrip, farm visits and a visit to the National Ploughing Championship within the two year cycle. Students are also encouraged to keep up to date with Agricultural developments through reading the Farmers Journal and other such material.
Agricultural Science consists of a terminal examination paper worth 75% and a practical report called the Farm File that is worth 25%.
Agricultural Science provides a strong basis for students who wish to embark on careers in Food Science, Biotechnology, Horticulture, Landscape Architecture, Equine Studies and Agriculture.
