Debating Club

The Department organises the Debating Club in the school and encourages students in both Junior and Senior cycles to develop their skills in public speaking.

Extract from the report on the Subject Inspection of English by the Department of Education and Science at Alexandra College, Date of inspection: 8 February, 2007
The following are the main strengths identified in the evaluation:
• There is very good whole school support for English in Alexandra College
• Planning to improve the quality of learning for students in the school is ongoing
• A range of co-curricular activities pertaining to English is available to students
• The college is to the forefront of innovation in relation to Information and
Communication Technology (ICT)
• English classrooms were examples of good practice in that they were well resourced and provided stimulating learning environments
• The school library is an excellent resource which is well managed and accessible to
students. Many students avail of the library for reading and research purposes
• Students with literacy or special educational needs are well cared for and supported by the school
• The quality of planning by the English department is excellent
• The laudable mission statement and aims of the English department are being realised
• English teachers in Alexandra College have ensured that English is a broad and enjoyable learning experience for students while at the same time preparing them very well for their state examinations
• The promotion of the reading habit from first year is a feature of the English department
• The English department is reflective and self-evaluative and ably works together for the betterment of its students
• Teaching in Alexandra College was of a very high quality
• Teachers are dedicated, committed to their work and innovative
• A feature of all lessons was the active student involvement
• Verbal and written skills were developed in all lessons
• Students were learning in an enjoyable, stimulating and respectful way
• Students achieve exceptionally well in both their Junior and Leaving Certificate English examinations
• Students’ copies and folders were maintained to a high standard and were corrected to a high standard with excellent formative assessment
• Students’ progress is regularly monitored and parents receive detailed feedback on this progress
