Music

The music department at Alexandra College offers a comprehensive range of instrumental and vocal tuition. There are many opportunities for students to participate in music-making through the various ensembles that exist in the College.

The College offers individual and group tuiton in the following disciplines:

• Intermediate Choir (years I-III)
• College Choir (years IV-VI)
• College Chamber Choir (years V&VI)
• College Orchestra (years I-VI)
• College Chamber Orchestra (years II-VI)
• College Jazz Club (years I-VI)
• College Traditional Band (years I-VI)

Within the school calendar, an annual choral competition for self-trained choirs takes place, whereby each class/year group compete for the Culwick and Gwladys Jones awards. Each class/year group is presented with the set song and they are then required to teach themselves the song, provide their own accompaniment and conductor. This competition has been in existence in the College since 1923 and is a much-anticipated event in the school year.

The ensembles mentioned above perform regularly at school concerts and public functions. The various opportunities for performing include a Winter concert, Spring concert, annual Carol Service and many other events associated with the College.To cope with the demand and pressures of such a vibrant department, there is an independent Music School which caters for the huge demand for music tuition in the College. This building houses ten rooms dedicated to the teaching of music in an environment that is welcoming, encouraging and dedicated to excellence in music education.
