Junior Cycle
The Junior Cycle Sports Programme is based on three 40-minute periods a week, broken up into a single P.E. class and a double games class.
The single P.E. class works in blocks of 6-8 weeks comprising the following areas: Fitness, Dance, Gym, Relays and Rounders. The double games class runs from September through to March 17th and from March 17th to the end of the summer term. This comprises the following areas where the girls have a choice in the particular area in which they wish to specialise:
* September – March 17th: Soccer, Basketball, Hockey, Badminton
* March 17th – June: Soccer, Tennis, Athletics, Cricket
There are also many varied after-school activities, such as Hockey, Basketball, Soccer, Tennis, Badminton, Athletics and Cricket (teams) and Soccer, Rugby, Badminton and Fitness.
The Senior Cycle Sports Programme is based on double games class for 5th and 6th years. 4th years have a triple class once per week.athletics
An element of choice is introduced and students may choose such activities as Badminton, Basketball, Yoga, Ballroom Dancing, Soccer, Gym, Dance, Uni-hoc, Rounders and Self Defence, etc. This allows 5th and 6th years an element of choice in their own learning and participation. We find this of vital importance at Senior level, where motivation is sometimes lacking.
The double games class for 5th and 6th year students and the triple class for 4th years allows for “option choices.” In this, approximately five activities are on offer to the students every 6-8 weeks, of which one is chosen.
Students are also encouraged to attempt activities that they may not have tried before or may never try again. The Senior Cycle options in particular place great emphasis on leisure activities which may be pursued on leaving school. These options are: Badminton, Soccer, Tennis, Rounders, Cricket, Hockey, Volleyball, Self-Defence, and Ballroom Dancing. Although the options may vary from term to term and from year to year, in general they stay the same.
As with the Junior Cycle, the same after-school activities are on offer and seniors are particularly encouraged to participate in some after-school sport of one type or another.
We in the P.E. department aim to encourage each student to partake in at least one activity which they can enjoy at whatever level they attain, regardless of their individual ability. With the many and varied activities we have on offer in Alexandra College, we hope to achieve this aim.
