2019 Artisan Day
The Transition Year Artisan Market Day took place on Saturday 11th May, the sun shone brightly and a wonderful day was had by all.
A special thanks to Alexandra College past pupil Caroline Nelson (class of 1997) for being our 2019 Artisans judge.
In 2009, she opened her first café, Nelly’s, in Portobello and she quickly made her mark with a Best in Dublin Award for her brownies. She then branched out to her current location, Nelly’s Café in Drumcondra, where we can recommend her delicious salads and homemade cakes.
Transition year student Simi Oluborode has written about her experience of Artisan’s Day 2019 below:
Today our year finally got to showcase what we had been preparing for, for months. The day started bright and early with all of us at school by 7am. Everybody was so excited and couldn’t wait for the day to begin.
I was part of the Brunch Club. We started off by making the smoothie mixes. We decided to blend everything on the day as it is much fresher and it saved people the hassle of bringing it in. We blended for about 2 hours constantly. The gazebos arrived and we started decorating.
The Super Bowls company were busy cooking rice for the bulgogi and Indian dhal, as well as preparing the beans and roast vegetables for the burrito bowls. The bain-marie that was needed for keeping the various dishes warm arrived and we split up into decorating the stall and setting up the Bain Marie (more difficult than we thought!).
Bubl prepared their homemade Nutella and waffles while The Cupcake Bar arranged hundreds of cupcakes.
The weather was amazing and it made everyone really excited. The turnout at first was slow, but soon everyone was busy.
The ‘Princess’ mixed berry smoothie bowl was the most popular, we got so many compliments on the flavour and some mums even asked for the recipe of the granola! The peach ice tea, brownies and waffles were very popular with the children. The Cupcake Bar sold approximately 500 cupcakes, there was a flavour for everyone!
Overall, the food was amazing, the weather was fantastic, the people were amazing and Artisans is definitely one of the great highlights of TY!
