LSMD Exams

The girls in J2-J6 have been preparing for their LSMD exams which will take place in the College next week, February 3rd - 7th. Ms. Quinn has given all the class teachers the day and time of your daughter's exam. You will find it in the homework diary.

Please note: There will be no regular Speech and Drama classes for all of next week as Ms. Quinn will be managing the exam schedule and supporting the girls as they take their exams.

The exams will begin each day at 8.45am and end at 3.00pm. If your daughter has an 8.45am start, please make sure that she is in school by 8.30am at the latest so that she can be brought over to the Senior School for her exam. It is very important that the schedule runs smoothly as there are almost 200 girls taking their exams.

Carboscan – The app to manage your carbon footprint

Carboscan is an innovative app enabling people to track their carbon footprint on a daily basis and view the grams of CO2 equivalent for all the products they purchase by simply scanning the product’s commercial barcode. The app sums each product’s CO2 eq contribution and shows clear charts to demonstrate weekly and monthly reviews with information about the user’s personal carbon footprint. From the app, it is also possible to join the Carboscan e-community and users can share, on a social media platform, the amount of grams of CO2 eq they have generated.

Carboscan will raise people’s awareness and change their daily habits by motivating them to buy more eco-friendly products, all in a fun way.

J2R and J2W Trip to The Ark

On Friday, 24th January, J2R and J2W visited The Ark for a traditional Irish music performance by a group called Goitse. Their instruments included a piano accordion, a keyboard, a bodhrán, a fiddle, a banjo and a guitar. They taught us about the rhythm of jigs and reels and we joined in when they sang songs including a song in Irish. We also learned about clapping rhythms and using body percussion as well as exploring the dynamics of performing loudly and softly. We enjoyed our trip to The Ark and we learned a lot about Irish music.

GREEN ACTION DAY

As we work toward our next Green Flag award which focuses on water, we had a special GREEN ACTION DAY on Thursday. Led by our very active and enthusiastic Green Schools Committee, a number of activities took place throughout the day that included:

  • Green Schools Assembly – classes recapped on what they have done to date, recited our Green Code and showed a short video on the importance of water.
  • We all took part in a Walk for Water – 1 lap around the hockey pitch for the Prep Department, two for J2-J4 and three laps for J5-J6.
  • Water Quiz for the older students
  • Meat-free lunch – our catering staff provided lots of meatless options for the girls for hot lunch and the cold lunch girls made the effort to have a meatless lunch too.

Well done to all the members of our GSC and to Ms. Richardson and Ms. Smith for making the day a great success.

Lunar New Year 2020 – Year of the Rat

Some of our Chinese nationals shared information with us about China in assembly this week. Charlotte, Larissa and Lisa  talked about the Lunar New Year celebrations and traditions with an excellent power point and posters.

The KG Uppers have been learning all about the Lunar New Year too.  They made Chinese lanterns, Chinese dragons and retold the story of the Chinese zodiac during assembly today.

Preschool Upper

The Preschool Upper girls celebrated Lunar New Year in style this year. They made Chinese lanterns, Chinese fans and designed beautiful Chinese outfits to decorate their room in bright Chinese festive colours. A highlight for them was sitting down to a feast of dumplings, savouries and pastries while listening to Chinese music in the background. Well done girls for joining in the celebration!

Pajama Day!

The girls enjoyed coming to school in their pajamas on Friday – it was all for a very good cause too. The event was organised by our Student Council and the money raised all went to My Lovely Horse Rescue animal centre who recently visited us in the Junior School to talk about the work they do to help animals.

Sports Update

AIJS Basketball

Our J6 girls enjoyed their day out at the annual AIJS Basketball tournament in Castle Park School Dalkey. Great team spirit – well done, girls.

Castle Park Great were hosts to a fun afternoon’s Basketball Tournament on Wednesday. Castle Park were the overall winners, in a busy and highly competitive sports hall.
Alexandra College Junior J6 Teams played well, but had no luck in a high scoring afternoon, hitting the hoop/ backboard and net more often than scoring. However, the girls did win some games!  Great efforts by all. They were rewarded with certificates in the end with the overall trophy going to the hosts Castle Park. Well done, everyone.
