“Let There Be Song” Update

Bogdan and his team came to Alex on Wednesday and recorded all the musical items for the Alex CD. He was hugely impressed with the girls! A huge thank you to Ms. Fitzgerald for preparing the girls so well and for coordinating the whole day and to Ms. Murray, Sarah Jane Millar, music teachers and class teachers staff for helping the day to run so smoothly.

Good luck to Betty Moore (J5R) as she competes in the Bebras National Final this Saturday!

Learning about Australia

Recently we have been learning about Australia and the Aboriginal people with our visiting teacher Ms. Russell. We learned about the animals of Australia and the sounds that they make. We also made our own didgeridoos using the same colours and patterns that the aboriginal people would use. We had great fun playing our new instruments and learning about these people’s beliefs. Today, we got to share all of our work with the rest of the girls in assembly. Well done, girls!

AIJS Debating Competition 2019

On Wednesday, May 8th, Lauren K. , Rachel O’C. and Kate H. from K6 went to St. Conleth’s College for the annual AIJS Debating debating competition to represent Alex. We were all buzzing with excitement waiting to start our debates. We prepared for two debates. We were opposing the first debate which was, ‘This house would boycott the oncoming live-action Disney movie remakes’.

We proposed the second motion which was, ‘This house regrets the Taoiseach’s recent public meeting with Donald Trump as part of the St. Patrick’s Day celebrations’.

When we got there, the principal of Conleth’s told us the rules of the competition. We then headed into our first debate against Teresians. Everyone spoke very well. The adjudicator, an experienced debater, gave us some feedback after the debate. It was a very intense debate, but we had a great time.

After the first debate we had a ten minute break before the second debate started. There was refreshments left out for all the teams. Then, every team proceeded to their next debate. We were against Conleth’s B team. It was a very enjoyable debate.

Before the prize giving, we attended a debating presentation led by two skilful debaters in 3rd year. It was very helpful and fascinating. After that the adjudicators had decided who had won the awards. We waited nervously to hear the results. Although we didn’t win the best overall team, everyone did extremely well, but we did come home with one prize. Lauren won the best overall speaker which we were all very proud of her. Overall the day was great fun!
