Last International Coffee Morning of the Year
This has been a very successful new initiative by the international parents in Alexandra College this year. The parents from both the Junior and Senior Schools get together every month in Wilde and Green for a coffee and chat. It will start up again in September.
Deer Park Fun Run
Well done to all the girls and their families who participated in the Deer Park Fun Run last Sunday morning. It was a super event and hopefully many of the girls will continue to take part in the run which takes place every Sunday morning at 9.30am.
On Saturday 11th of May, Betty Moore (J5R) travelled to Maynooth University to represent Alexandra College Junior School in the Finals of the Bebras Computational Thinking Competition. A total of 7,000 students took part in the first round of the competition in the various categories and out of that, only 170 students made it through the Finals. Betty was one of these 170 students who made it through, which was a considerable achievement considering it was her first time partaking in the competition. She did a fantastic job representing herself and her school at the competition. Well done, Betty!
Bebras Presentation at the Amazon Web Services Headquarters in Dublin for the IT Professionals Day Event ran as part of TechWeek:
Not content with representing her school at the Bebras Finals on Saturday, Betty Moore was off with five of her classmates, Eva Murphy, Charlotte McEnroe, Alessandra Paloni, Abigail Moran and La ura van Buylaere to the Amazon Services Headquarters in Dublin. As the girls had all performed so well in the first round of the competition, they were asked to come and give a talk about the Bebras Challenges to IT professionals as part of an event ran by TechWeek. The six girls absolutely outdid themselves at Amazon, giving a super presentation to the 60+ strong audience. They explained to the IT professionals present at the event what the Bebras challenges entail and engaged the audience to see if they could solve a challenge. They girls conducted themselves very professionally and I would not be surprised if Amazon already has them lined up for positions in the future!
J3W Engineers at Work!
On Wednesday in J3W we had a visitor who taught us about engineering. Mr. Bannon told us about the different types of engineers (There were a lot!). We were given different examples and we had to decide which type of engineer we would need, for example, you would need a mechanical engineer to build a car. We used jellies and toothpicks to form geometric semi-domes in groups. We also learned about teamwork while we were doing it. It was a lot of fun. Once we were finished we were allowed to eat the left-over Haribos and, because we were so well behaved, he gave us NO HOMEWORK!!!
JS Orchestra Outing
The JS Orchestra set off to the Grange Golf Club on Thursday to perform for a very special group of ladies called The Ladybirds. Former principal of the College, Gladys Ruddock, invited the orchestra to play for the special lunch event at the golf club. The girls performed beautifully and were joined by the amazing Erica Li (Fifth Year) who played a few pieces on the violin too. Many thanks to Ms. O’Rourke for directing the girls and we look forward to returning to this event again next year.
J1 Say: Here Comes the Summer!
Summer is approaching! J1 students have been enjoying the beautiful weather and sunshine this week. We learned a poem ‘In Summer’ by Liana Mahoney and we love singing so much that we learned a song called ‘Mr. Sun’. We hope that our poem and song will help the beautiful weather to stay with us!
Elsa Mooney, Lauren Kinsella, Kate Murphy and Belle Moore represented Alex in the annual AIJS tennis tournament in Rathdown last Saturday. The girls performed really well and enjoyed the event.
Well done to our J3/J4 swim team who took part in the AIJS swimming Gala last Monday in Castle Park School. The Alex team came second overall. Great job, girls!
Our golf team took part in the annual AIJS golf event in Delgany Golf Club on Thursday. The team – Lucianne Gannon, Charlotte McEnroe, Julia Clarke and Ciara Mc Gowan had a super day out, with Ms. Tracey, herself a keen golfer, encouraging them all the way. The Alex team came in second place – well done, girls!
