J5 Microbit Workshops
On Monday of this week, both J5 classes partook in a Microbit workshop. A Microbit is a small, programmable computer and helps introduce students to the basics of coding and programming. The workshop was facilitated by a Karen Nolan, a lecturer from TU Dublin-Tallaght, and the girls thoroughly enjoyed it. To begin with they discussed the different ways in which business and sport have made uses of advances in coding and technology. Karen also discussed with the girls the importance of the STEM subjects before the girls got down to work; coding their Microbits! This proved to be a lot of fun and the girls focused on a number of coding tasks from making their Microbits smile, to creating a counter for birdwatching!
KGLr Assembly – ‘What a Wonderful World’.
In our Science and circle times this week, Kg Lower have been talking about the waste in our world and its effects.
We learned how so many things are wasted every day. Some examples we discussed included, Water, Paper, Plastics, Food, Energy, Electricity, Clothes and Money – we know there are many more types of waste! How many more can you think of?
We then turned our attention to thinking about the harm that waste is causing to our environment and how we could all be more careful with our daily recycling.
Our theme, ‘What a Wonderful World’ has encouraged us to continue feeling thankful for our surroundings and nature’s beauty.
The Kg Lower girls worked very hard on their presentation, showing their colourful pictures and great writing skills, depicting what they love about the world.
I love nature. Cristina
I love going on class trips. Nika
I love having a pet. Hannah and Ann
I love my family and friends. Grace and Aimee
I love animals and going to the zoo. Alex
I love watching movies. Ruby and Eliana
I love seeing people having fun. Aoibheann
I love doing art. Zara

We then showed a video clip of the wonderful world that David Attenborough brings to our screens. We appreciated the audience’s participation, when Kg Lower proudly sang Louis Armstrong’s famous song, ‘What a Wonderful World’.
We hope our assembly’s message will make everyone think and act on showing even more care for Reducing, Reusing and Recycling and remember that every little bit we do really does help to make a difference.
A super effort and a great performance Kg Lower – very well done! Ms Boyd
