J2R and J2W:  Water Conservation Workshop

On Friday, 1st March, Joanna from Grass Roots Education visited J2R and J2W to talk to us about water conservation. She showed us a presentation of facts on saving water and the many ways in which we use water. 97% of the world’s water is salty, 2% is frozen water in icecaps and 1% is available for our use. We learned how much water is in our bodies and we were surprised to learn that it is over 75%. We looked at the water cycle and found out that all the water from the beginning of time is continuously being reused, but happily it is cleaned before we use it now! Joanna showed us a map of an imaginary island that has water shortages. We came up with solutions to the water conservation issues and we pretended that we were the Water Avengers who were meeting a government representative. We enjoyed Joanna’s visit and we learned a lot of new information which will help us with being a Green School and conserving water at home.

J3 visit the Cool Planet Experience

Last Friday, the J3 students visited the Cool Planet Experience in Powerscourt, County Wicklow. It was a fun, interactive climate action experience. We got to immerse ourselves in the story of Ireland’s changing climate, the science behind it and we discovered some great ways to reduce our carbon footprint.

We all got the school bus and when we arrived there we got special bands. We were divided into groups and arranged ourselves into different stations. At the start, we played a game that asks questions that measures our carbon footprint – this means how much damage we are doing to the environment. In every room, we learned something different. In the first room, we watched a video with pictures of how much we are destroying the world which was a little bit scary as we have such a beautiful planet. The next room was called The Food Word and we answered a quiz by jumping on certain places on the floor. After that, we made our pledges which included our promises to making the world a better place. For lunch we had a picnic outside in the sun. It was a really interesting school trip.  We learned how we can save our world so that in 2030 we will have a better working relationship with the Earth.

KGLr – Pancake Tuesday

KG Lower loved learning about Pancake Day. We talked about our favourite toppings and created a page about Shrove Tuesday. We learned some of the traditions that happen on this special day before Lent begins and how other countries celebrate. We read the story Pancakes, Pancakes, by Eric Carle and made a creative display about it..
A perfect ending to the day, was enjoying a tasty pancake treat!

World Book Day 2019!

We love to celebrate World Book Day in the Junior School! Everyone got in the spirit and dressed up as their favourite book character.

The J5W students led our morning assembly for World Book Day. They really love to read in J5W, so they shared some information about their favourite authors and book series, such as the “Diary of a Wimpy Kid” series.  They also enjoyed sharing information about the history of books and where the first books came from. Lastly, they tested everyone’s knowledge with a quiz. The girls were very impressed with how much the other girls knew about books!

Well done to everyone for making this a memorable day for everyone!
