From the Office

Dance Classes: There will be no Dance classes next Wednesday Feb 6th.

JS Lunch Menu: This menu is emailed to you every week and is available on the College’s website. There is also a copy of it in every classroom. If your daughter does not like a particular item, it is best to pack a cold lunch for her.

Lunch card top ups: Please make sure to top up your daughter’s card regularly. Many of the JS cards are still in arrears. It is a lot of extra admin time for George and his staff if cards are not topped up.

New JS Initiative – Touch-Type Read and Spell – TTRS

Touch-Type Read and Spell – TTRS –  is a new initiative for students from J2 to J6 in Alexandra College Junior School. It is a touch typing course that teaches keyboarding, develops reading and spelling skills, builds confidence and motivates students to succeed. The programme is primarily designed for students who have been recommended to use assistive technology by an Occupational Therapist or Educational Psychologist.

It started in November 2018 with 16 students split into 2 groups. Each group has a 30 minute session twice a week. The students are also required to practise at home most days for about 10 minutes. Many students now have their own laptops, but some are using the school MacBooks.

TTRS is divided into 24 levels with each level divided into 31 modules. The children will type 4,000 different words by the end of the course! The keys are introduced sequentially following a phonics program. Small, incremental steps are delivered so each student works at their own pace. TTRS is a multi-sensory learning programme: students see, hear and type each word.

Happy St. Brigid’s Day!

Today, although the weather doesn’t really reflect it, we are welcoming in the season of spring and waving goodbye to winter. It is also the day we celebrate the feast of St. Brigid, one of Irelands three patron saints. To mark the occasion, the girls of J6 Red led assembly, teaching the junior school girls about the life of this remarkable person. Through drama (and some creative licence!) the J6 girls re-enacted how St. Brigid gave away her father’s precious sword to help a poor man, how she convinced a king to let her build a convent and how she taught a pagan druid about God, creating her iconic cross in the process. The J6 Red girls really enjoyed learning about St. Brigid and had great fun preparing for this assembly. Well done, girls!

J3 and J6 Visit Irish Aid

Recently,  J3 and J6 visited the Irish Aid Centre in Harcourt Street. We went on the Luas and most of us had to stand because there were no seats left! We were very respectful. When we got there, two lovely ladies called Winnie and Caoimhe met us and they were very interesting. They taught us lots of nice things like how to sing in Swahili and how to play the drums. We also watched a video on how we can save the world by following the United Nation’s guidelines. The guidelines tell us to make sure we have gender equality, protect children’s rights and to mind the environment. We did a game with a story involving solar cookers and running around! It was great fun. At the end of our visit, we all got stickers and a colouring book with crayons.
